The vigil, which had been planned by the town of Fairfield and domestic violence The Center for Family Justice, was intended to show support for the Andrews family who were at the center of a violent incident Tuesday morning.
Christopher Andrews, 51, was shot to death by Fairfield Officer Sean Fenton. Andrews approached the officer with a knife in his hand and refused repeated orders to drop it during a confrontation at about 6 a.m. Tuesday in the driveway of his rented home on Mountain Laurel Road.
Inside the home, Andrews’ wife had been stabbed and his 12-year-old son bludgeoned with a bat, police said. His 13-year-old daughter, who had called 911, and his 15-year-old son, who wrestled the bat from his father, were also injured, police said.
But through friends and a lawyer, the Andrews family said it does not want to be linked with the label "domestic violence" because the incident was out of character for Andrews, the Connecticut Post reported.
Bridgeport lawyer Michael Meehan said the family is thankful for the community support but want privacy at this time, the Post said.
Meehan also told the Post that the Andrews family had not endorsed and had no affiliation with the vigil.
The wife was last reported in stable condition in Bridgeport Hospital and the 12-year-old son in critical condition in Yale-New Haven Hospital.
